Description

title has dkc syndrome.
remember when i said i was going to spam you with hastily-drawn pokecomics?
i lied.
Kawiko's holding this contest where people design creatures for them, so i hopped into it. it's pretty open-ended, you should go take a look yourself. :meow: hurry though; not much time left!
pfha, the only reason i'm even entering is because i need a premium to be rid of this username once and for all. past stupidity is great motivation.
also because i'll take any excuse to design weird critters for people.

contest's over, i didn't win, now these are all MY BABBIES.
i love them so.
Credit to  :iconcandyblooded: for helping me with colors!
Details about each:(drawing notes after the --)

1. a catlike creature that’s quite haughty and mischievous. Cunning, quick, and fragile, it feeds not only on small animals like mice and fish, but of the essences of life around it to fuel its fiery attacks. Individuals affected by the latter feel no pain, however, and hardly suffer more than some brief fatigue. It also occasionally eats metals to keep its flame the desired color. Its tails lend it extreme agility in flight , and the creature often expands them to use as a blanket when sleeping
It’s said the creature can only be trusted and tamed by one other, but the two have yet to unite

pff what even happened here. this creature started out as what is essentially a quadrupedal chokobo. it obviously isn't that anymore, in fact, the only thing that stayed is the body structure.

2. quick and rugged, this one can live nearly anywhere. it is the roaming type that will continuously break off and rejoin groups of its species or any other that will accept it. the two large claws are especially developed for uneven terrain, as they are disjointed and can swivel to odd angles. its velvety fur shines in duotone and fades to the secondary color at the end of the long bits on its dexterous tail and legs. It has an affinity for anything of equal or greater sheen than its coat, and will often collect and/or steal glimmering objects, though it does so out of curiosity more than malice and often forgets or outright leaves behind its stashes when it decides to travel again. It’s not uncommon to see it running around with a necklace or something of the sort on it. they are affectionate and can be kept as pets, but more often than not their instincts will get the better of them and they will run away.

not a whole lot to say. this is the first i've tried shading with a color instead of shades of normal light-dark shading. i like how it looks and i hope i'll find a reason to do this again :3

3. More plant than animal, it does not need to eat, drink, or even breathe to live. It disperses pollen for communication and various other purposes by swiveling its large ears and breathes through the spiracles lining its back. with no real means of defense, it is always alert and dashes off at the first sign of danger.
Its “fur” is functionally the same as roots, absorbing things from the air and places where it lies down. It will be given a slight tint depending on what it has taken from its surroundings. This, as well as the size of the leaf that forms its tail is a good indicator of its, and by extent, the environment’s health. its doesn't seem to have actual bones and lacks muscle for finer movements; its structure is held together by stiff fibers much like trees, and it regulates the turgidity in its ears and tail to move them. in mating season, they will follow the scent of another's pollen, and brush their ears together to fertilize the seeds, which the parent disperses through the large hole on the tip of its nose. there are no male or female. said seeds embed in the ground and grow like a normal plant [with only the tail-leaf uncovered] until the beast reaches maturity. the duration of its 'infant' state varies.
--
i find the concept of a sentient, animal-like plant absolutely enthralling. can you tell?

4. this rare dragon doesn't grow to be more than the size of a rat. It shares an odd symbiosis with a certain plant, which awakens with it in the spring. it is immediately drawn to this plant, which blooms only in this creatures' presence. Once the two unite, the dragon gains potent healing abilities and its mere presence is enough to perk up most life. Its wings flap in a wavelike motion to allow it graceful flight, though on the ground is needs to use its perpetually-curled tail for support if it’s standing on its hind legs. Despite its delicate appearance, it's actually very muscular and durable.

not much to say here.

The Doggenfly: it can and will eat nearly anything, and is considered a pest in many areas. It behaves mostly like a normal dog, save for the loud buzzing its wings make in flight or when intimidated. it is a weak flier and hostile by nature, but very loyal when tamed. Its attentiveness makes taming and training it surprisingly easy once one gets past its fierce demeanor, and it will bravely defend any who have earned its trust. the colors and patterning vary from individual to individual, but there seems to a be a loosely-fitting theme between males and females.

chimeras wooo. this is pretty basic so yeah. jewel beetles are pretty cool.

6. a lively and social creature that lives in the tropics and spends most of its time fluttering about in groups in search of nectar and berries. It only roosts with its feet for short periods, preferring to rest hanging with its tail somewhat like a bat. it's said it gets new patterns on its plumage with every season. It can move the tassels on its head at will, but the tips will always be curled.
--
this actually started out as a dragon's nose. the eye was the nostril, and the tassel things were whiskers. but for no reason in particular my mind went NOPE IT'S GONNA BE A BIRD THING NOW.

none have names because i'm terrible at names.
I'd greatly appreciate any name suggestions! :meow:

Wow, this is probably the most accurate representation of what my skechbook/”normal art” looks like I’ve ever uploaded. Well, mostly. Most of these are purposely more elegant and mystical than what I usually draw, but the premise is the same--creatures. Lots of creatures.
