Once upon a time, there was a small, young, green Yoshi named Roscoe. One day, he became curious of how all the different-colored Yoshies got to be their own color, and if it had anything to do with their abilities, so He went to go talk to the older Yoshies. In the middle of town, there was an old red Yoshi who knew a great deal of his history. Roscoe asked him about the colors. Ol' red (as many called him) gave a speech that he had given to many different young Yoshies many times before. He said that there are nine main colors: red, purple, pink, orange, blue, black, brown, yellow, and green. Each color gets a special ability. These are (respectively): breathe fire, breathe ice, walk through things, gills, flight, invisibility, tame any wild animal, incredible speed, and nothing special. All Yoshis hatch being green, and must make a journey to change their color (if they want). He also said that the "road" to each was hard to travel without the ability that it rewarded. For example, the pink challenge was a giant maze. Any not-pink Yoshi would have to work hard to find his or her way to the end. Once they became pink, they could simply walk through all the walls to get out.
That night, Roscoe got very little sleep. There were several tantalizing possibilities! On one hand, being a flashy orange color and being able to breathe underwater would come in handy; on the other, flight would grant him freedom, fun, and safety. On a third note, Roscoe would enjoy being brown because also loved animals. He continued to think about this until he finally fell asleep. The next day, he went around the village talking to several other Yoshies of the three colors he was considering. The orange ones said that their challenge was a flooded cave. They had to swim through the frigid water and find pockets of air trapped at the bottom to survive. The blue Yoshies said their trip took them to the peak of Mt. Phillip—a long yet not particularly difficult journey that actually ended above the clouds. After he finished playing with their many pets, the brown Yoshies told Roscoe that that the brown "path" tracked through a dense jungle packed with fearsome beasts, which made for a relatively short, but very dangerous trip.
Roscoe pondered their words for the rest of the day. He eliminated orange because he didn't want to risk drowning. It was a tough choice between brown and blue, but out of sheer desperation, he ruled out brown simply because he blue was his favorite color. Young Roscoe also hastily decided that he didn't need to train in order to climb to the peak of Mt. Phillip. He just went to bed an hour or two earlier for the next few days, then set out in the early morning when he was ready. Mt. Phillip was just past Bow Lake. Bow Lake was just past farmer Frost's fields, and the fields were just outside of the village. Before he set out, he got a canteen of water, and when he got to Frost's fields, he took some fruit with him too. Once he reached the base of the mountain, he looked up in astonishment at its size. It had never looked so big from the village! However, he began the climb anyway. At first, it was easy—just hopping around from rock to rock. He had done that a million times before in the village when he was messing around with his friends. Slowly and gradually, however, the climb got more and more vertical, with less jutting footholds. After climbing up, diagonally, and sometimes sideways for a while, Roscoe found a ledge big enough to sit on. He stopped to rest and get a drink of water on it. He looked around and caught sight of a small piece of paper sticking out from under a rock. He picked it up and tried to decipher the blurred words. It had obviously been there for quite a while. The note read: Hey! I'm not the only Yoshi to find this ledge! Most others go up the opposite side of this mountain, where it's a bit easier. I think this way is more fun. Anyway, if/when you earn your wings, come see me in town. My name is Eric. lots of people know me. Just ask around if you don't.  Good luck.
He thought about it. Did he know an "Eric"? Maybe. He decided he would have to think about it later, and resumed his climb. At the halfway mark, he rested again. He found another piece of paper, but it turned out to be an old ad for melons. Roscoe loved melons, but he hadn't brought any with him. The melons looked good, but Roscoe was determined not to go home until he could fly there. He continued on until he was above the clouds. At this point, only about 1/5 of his journey remained, and knowing this, he took another rest. He took out the grapes that he picked from the farmer's fields. Grapes were fun. He liked to toss them up into the air and snag them with his tongue. After he ate them all, he resumed his climb for the last time and reached the peak in less than an hour. It was only then that he saw the beauty of his world. Rolling hills, vast plains, shimmering lakes, and his quaint little village far off in the distance; it was all simply breathtaking. Then he turned around and saw something else beautiful… it was the    ?   box that contained what he had worked so hard for. He jumped up and hit it, then quickly grabbed the wings that rose out of it. He did it! Roscoe was now a blue, winged Yoshi! He happily jumped off Mt. Phillip and flew in loop-de-loops and zigzags all the way back to the village. He did stall out and fall a few times, but that was simply because he wasn't fully used to his wings yet.
After a quick lunch, he went out and asked around for a Yoshi named "Eric". It didn't take long to find someone who knew where he lived. Roscoe went over and knocked on his door. An orange Yoshi answered.
"Hello, Can I talk to Eric?"
"I'm Eric"
"But, you're not blue"
"No, I'm not. What would make you think that?"
"I found this note up on Mt. Phillip."
"Oh, really? I thought that thing was long gone. Wow. I put that there after I got my wings. I guess not many Yoshies go up the mountain that way. It's nice to know that I wasn't the only one. "
"Is it really easier on the other side?"
"I think so; I climbed up the other side for fun after I noticed mostly everyone else went up a different way than I did."
"Oh…but why aren't you blue?"
"Didn't Ol' Red tell you? We Yoshies can change our color every year, if we want."
Roscoe was excited to hear this, and decided that he would definitely have to give brown a try, in a few years. (But that might be another story)
meh. this is an old story i wrote for English. it's not that good, but enjoy. and there most likely won't be another one of these. unless people want another...
